First off, Spence Cafe was one of my favorite restaurants, not only in West Chester, but in the surrounding Philadelphia area. They had delicious food, great service, and wonderfully simple decor. Since, it became Spence Remedy, the Pale Horse and now the Social Lounge. Out of disappointment, I did not return until recently. Having heard some minor positive rumbles, a friend and I had lunch outside. While the brand new patio built strictly for the property was slanted and uneven, the food was not. The food was a very healthy portion, maybe a little too much considering it was lunch. The service was fine, but it was a late lunch and wasn’t very busy. In a month or two, we decided to go again for a friends birthday dinner. This time it was held on a busy West Chester Friday night. The food was still very tasty. However, the drink specials were not. To make matters worse, the service was all over the place and slow. For the amount of tables and space, including the outdoor area, they probably should have had more staff, and staff who weren’t too busy being the party instead of encouraging it. Finally, the actual restaurant seemed dirty, but not in a cool way. Overall, I will return to The Social Lounge, but only for takeout.
By the way; why are the prices significantly lower on the website???????????
Extreme disappointment! Loved the food and service after 6 visits and tonight prices had gone way up! (sandwiches up to$10 from $6.99). $18 prime rib was 3/8 in thick and fried to warm it up. Chips for table NEVER CAME. Pistachio chicken was actually chicken strips (tenders). All this from the chef from my favorite restaurant ever? The Big Easy. A complaint to the waitress did NOTHING. We sat with empty beers twice for 10 minutes each time??? My favorite restaurant in West Chester might have just dropped from the top to the bottom of my list. Sadly, the food had been awesome in previous visits (only 2 weeks ago before prices went way up) Don’t put prime rib on the specials if you’re gonna serve a 3/8 in thick, overcooked ribeye. I don’t know where to go or if to give them another chance. To be honest, it sucked and HAD BEEN awesome.
Low prices and the food is good. It concerns me that it’s always empty though. Went once for dinner on a Friday night with a friend and it was fairly empty. My dinner was really good especially for the price (crab cake with watermelon and arugula salad). We split the Nola Fries – super rich and yummy (fries with a white cheese sauce, crab meat and old bay). Went again for lunch with coworkers and we were the only ones there. Got the ALT (avocado, lettuce, and tomato with bacon) – the bread was a bit stale and not in the “good crusty bread way) so that was a disappointment. My coworker got the grilled cheese with creamy tomato soup and said the soup was really delicious. My other coworkers said their food was “OK”. I suspect if business picked up stale bread wouldn’t be an issue. Honestly for the price the food was good and the menu also good for what you would expect at that price. Don’t know how long it will last though based on the lack of customers.
Cool bar, comfy dining area, service was great, and the food was excellentI Awesome menu with some really different and unique options. I can’t wait to get back and try some other menu choices! Hard to believe this place isn’t more crowded or hasn’t received more buzz…especially because the prices can’t be beat and the quality of the food has been outstanding.
Tim – amswoee brah! good job and the venue does look amazing. looks like something you would see in a movie.
