My son and I came into Mas Mexicali Cantina one night to try it for dinner and the hostess Devon made us feel so at home that we have been back every week since. Besides the great food my son gets so excited to see Devon and give her a big hug!
We went on a bar crawl last night for a friend’s birthday, totalling 7 bars in all. Mas had the best customer service of them all. They really made us feel welcome, along with offering a flaming shot to the birthday girl. It was a nice night made that much more special by their nice gesture, and we felt as if they truly cared that we were there, and appreciated our patronage. We stayed for a couple drinks, and some appetizers… we’ll be back for more!
I really like Mas for drinking and some of their food is really good, like the bad boy nachos and corona fish tacos. I didn’t like the korean short rib tacos but my boyfriend did, so maybe the “tastes” just didn’t mesh well with me. However the consensus from my friends and I (table of
was that the mexican dynamite sticks were bland, the concept sounded good but obviously not executed properly. I go there at least twice a week to drink when I’m in school, I love the atmosphere and the bartenders are really accommodating, if they don’t know what a drink or shot is they look it up on the computer, which is more than most bars in WC do. I have them 4/5 stars.
Absolutely the worst food I’ve ever eaten…dirty sticky menus…I’ve eaten here 4 times…Cheap food…but its nasty…too bad they can’t get a better quality food because atmosphere is nice when all the college kids aren’t around…
I don’t understand all the negative reviews…I do understand John’s complaint, which was valid and constructive in it’s nature…I’ve been to Mas a few times, and we have friends that go even more. Obvioulsy, we enjoy the food, the atmosphere, etc. Yes, it can get a little loud if you’re on the roof deck, and no the food isn’t necessairly “authentic” mexican…but it’s good, there’s a lot of it, and I’ve never had a problem with the wait staff. I only began going recently, so if you haven’t been there since it opened, I’d recommend giving it another try. It is no longer a “Dave McGrogan” venture (check the website under owners) so it seems to me like they changed the staff and the attitude if nothing else.
Dear Mas:
I was at a party recently at one of your fine establishments, Mas Cantina, in West Chester. I was having a good time. It was on the second floor of the dining room. I was putting back beers, slapping backs, guffawing–you know, doing what we all like to do when we relax. A few hours into the festivities, something caught my eye. It was a wee little thing on a large picture.
No, it wasn’t the tattooed babe wearing the S&M dominatrix hat that was directly above me. Her rough-and-tough nature, her pursed lips, her inked-up arms were definitely in keeping with a gun-toting Geronimo to her right and the bandolier-strapping bandito hermanos to her left. I know Mas touts that “rebel” ambiance and that ambiance is everything in the restaurant business. That’s all good. Ok, I get it: Skulls. Mexican bandits. Poncho Villa and his gang. Tattoos. Chains. Thorny roses. Hub caps on the wall.
Fine.
What caught my eye, was not all that. What made me put my drink down and do the double take was the little death’s head emblem on the sex-woman’s hat (see attached photo).
Believe me, I’m rarely someone to push the “offensive” button. I really am. Not much bothers me. Live and let live and all that. But that emblem bothers me a lot. It’s bothered me so much, it’s compelled me to get my butt of the sofa and write you.
Do you know what this emblem is? Do you know who wore this symbol? Do you know what was done while people were wearing it? That hat with that symbol: do you know that, for many, many millions of people, it was the last thing they actually saw/stared at before they were shot/hanged/gassed? I don’t want to sit here and catalog every little atrocity and cite every statistic. After a while the numbers just run together into a cruel crimson sea.
Suffice it to say, the SS death’s head emblem is not a nice symbol. It doesn’t belong underneath a bunch of unsuspecting suburbanites while they sing happy birthday to their golf buddy; it shouldn’t gaze down at a gaggle of chuckling West Chester University sorority girls while they do shots of Jose Cuervo; it’s incongruous with Mas’ trademark “kitchen sink burrito” or “Korean short rib taco.” It’s a damned blight and it reflects very poorly on you and your establishment. Your decor buyers should be ashamed of themselves.
I don’t think you should have that photo on your wall. There are a lot of other people, also customers of yours, who agree with me; I’m going to now ask them to write you.
With sincere regards,
John Salter
Perennial Mas customer
P.S. In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s some help (compare the symbols)
Since the separation from the “management group” Más’ attention to the food, service and overall guest experience has increased with a more local, hands-on approach. They welcome you back. Some of the same exact negative reviews posted below were posted on other reputable websites, and they have since been filtered and/or removed for being fictitious and unfounded. Sorry to see the gullible, blind followers are still out there.
So ..are you part of the new management group ? if so please tell us what changes have been put into place , I would be willing to try again if you could tell us some things that have changed ……I know my previous comments about Mas are not fiction or unfounded
Yes – and thank you for your genuine feedback. Yours, as well as other constructive comments, drove the changes. Feel free to try us again!
Disappointed
As a long time resident of West Chester I was excited to see this restaurant open up, however, I am sadly disappointed in the quality of place it has become.
I have visited Mas on several occasions and it seems to continue to get worse. In my opinion it is no longer a restaurant but just another kiddie bar in town with less than mediocre food!
STAY AWAY! The food was awful, I couldn’t finish my meal I was too afraid I would be sick later!!
Being a Mexican American, I was excited to try Mas in spite of the terrible reviews. I should have listened! The food does not represent mexican or mexicali, whatever they want to call it, cooking in any way. I was embarrassed for the owners/chef that they feel comfortable putting out this bad of a product.
I guess they are relying on the bar to make them $$ as they have a Cinco de Mas (another embarrassing take on my culture) promo going on with girls being body painted and beads getting handed out…sounds similar to a sleazy strip club.
What’s confusing is they try to simultaneously act like it’s a family restaurant while still promoting these sleazy weekend parties.
It’s a Major identity crisis!
I would not recommend going here unless you just want to get wasted on crappy margaritas and pick up some desperate girls who are in full body paint.
WORST RESTAURANT IN THE DUB C!!!
Upon entering, I had to use the restroom and the mens room is foul. It smells like pee and all along the floor the wall is completely buckled out from hopefully just moisture but judging from the smell I fear the worst. I am immediately grossed out.
I let our server know and then I was informed that the mens room has been that way since opening!!! C’mon guys really?
Our service seemed disorganized and awkward and as our server continued to inform us of all the problems at Mas…we found out their new Chef and GM left as well as numerous employees that quit or being “released” and that the restaurant has turned over so much staff noone knows what is going on.
I am embarrassed to say we stayed and ate after that warning from I’m sure what is about to be a “released” server.
The margaritas were awful, we sent them back and the second round was so tart and tasted nothing like the first round we decided to just grab a few beers. The manager that came to apologize looked like he was 12 and had an I really don’t care tone simply saying because they make the margaritas fresh without mix consistency can be an issue.
Needless to say the food was just as underwhelming no spice, no flavor and no reason to visit this place again.
If you’re curious and want to be completely disappointed go before they go out of business, it sounds like that is the next step…NO MAS!!!
Bland Bomb of Americanized Mexican!
The unfortunately named Mas left us wanting exactly that in the flavor department.
We went on a Monday and their website indicated it was all you can eat burritos – it was not.
I still ordered the Carne Asada burrito and the mystery meat inside was dry and chewy.
The description indicated that it would be spiced with chili adobe, I’m guessing they missed that step, there was no heat in this meal at all. The second indicator of spice was in the beans “chipotle spiked” again could not taste any spice the reality was I had a soggy cold burrito with chewy meat.
The silver lining in my experience was my server who was apologetic and courteous throughout.
The decor is campy and reminded me of a not so great replica of the Pink Taco in Vegas, which I was told was their inspiration for the 2nd floor bar.
If they can match the food with the service this place may have a chance, but judging from the recent barrage of reviews it looks like it’s just going downhill fast.
Final Impression – No passion, just imitation.
The drinks are decent but the food is terrible. It is a sad, sad day when a Mexican restaurant can't even get tortilla chips right. My friend and I barely touched our meals – they were inedible. The staff is friendly enough but the service is very slow. This place just can't get it right – no matter what the name is…
so it seems another West Chester restaurant has forgotten how important service is ..we went last night and were happy to see we could get seated right away , we sat for 10 minutes with a waiter stopping at the table across from us 3 times and nobody even motioned at us , stopped by to say we will be right with you …..so we left and went to Rams Head and had a great meal ….I would say the look of shock on the hostess face was the only good thing about MAS …such a bummer as our 1st trip was good enough to come back ….this 2nd trip will be our last …..maybe we will try what goes in that building next
Service was slow and food took an hour to arrive. When we finally got the appetizer which I completely forgot about, I thought it was the main course!
The waitress told us several times that the "menu lies" when ordering and that selection wasn't available.
Drinks were slow to arrive to the point you ordered ahead of time to compensate.
The food was standard, bland American style Mexican. It seems that the staff was more concerned about setting up for the Saturday night crowd than anything else and although our waitress was nice, she never apologized for the long wait.
This is more of night spot than a restaurant.
My first time at MAS was amazing. The second time the food was not that good. The third time the food was horribel!! My fourth and final time last night put me over the edge. Our server was very bad, never at our table, took about 20 mins just to get a drink and the food was soo bland and tasteless. I will not be going back. Great building and very unique inside but horrible mexican food.
Went last Friday. Good crowd not crazy busy.
Cons:
Margaritas were average at best
Drinks while we were at our table were very slow to arrive
No exaggeration, food took an hour and a half to come after we ordered and we had kids with us. Absolutely unacceptable (don't know if that was a server, cook or system problem but freakin fix it)
No chips/salsa anything while waiting
We told our server to tell his manager we weren't happy about how long the food took. It would have been nice to have the manager at least stop by to placate us. A comped $4 quesidilla would have gone a long way to change our impression of least their customer service, but nothing.
Pros:
Once the food got there it was very good.
Price is right
Good vibe/decor
I enjoyed the food. The drinks were good. The waitress was either at your table continously or you could not find them. However over all it was good. Not overpriced. 3 people with drinks 77.00. If someone wants to eat cheap, they should go to mcdonalds or stay home. I will go again.!!!
I went last weekend during the afternoon ..I was spared any loud music issue ..got the nachos ..pretty bland …we both got salads 1 beef 1 chicken..both pretty good …would go back for the salad …looked like a decent place to watch a game during the day on the weekend as it was not crowded…I will return
Went there with my boyfriend to try the new place out and were hoping to sit on the roof but as many people have mentioned, it's rarely open, which is really frustrating. Our service in general was great and our server was very friendly and helpful, though we didn't catch her name. However, the quality of the food was very poor. We we given the complimentary pico de gallo and "warm" tortilla chips .. the pico was watery and tasteless and the chips were far from warm. We started with the flaming queso appetizer, which was a joke. It was lit at the table, went out within a matter of seconds, and the appetizer itself tasted like ground up sausage with Kraft cheese slices melted on top. Our entrees were edible, and that was about it. I will say that the Tres Leches dessert was good, but the actual product was QUITE far from the description given in the menu. The drinks were great, the specials seem reasonable, AND they have free salsa lessons on Mondays. We'll be back, just NOT for the food!
NO WAY would I go back.First off, the music was too loud. Apparently, we were ordering and the waiter couldn't hear us because we were put right near a speaker.Second, I ordered plain meat and cheese tacos, no beans, double rice. Tacos on corn shell. I ended up getting plain meat and cheese tacos, no beans, double rice with tacos on "wheat" tortilla.Third, I think this place is the right place for 20s and 30s singles, not 40s and teens like me and my parents. We will not go back as a family again. Sorry Mas!
Don't read the comments from the other people here as they are talking about whatever the last place was. Mas has done a good job with the place. I have eaten there three times already and each time has been very good. Atmosphere is very nice and I can't wait to drink some coronas on the roof top bar (Too windy on Saturday). Only gripe is that the fajitas had small portions, but everything else was large enough.
This is why new owners are buying it and hopefully turning it around. I would hate to see another bank take over the building or offices. It should stay a unique restuarant. We have everything downtown. The rooftop is nice during the summer for the night breezes.
Should stay open later though!
Hey, where'd you go????
The only thing going for this place is the rooftop which closes at midnight-when it's open at all.
This place is a joke..found 3 different hairs in my meal, which was horrible food anyway. i paid 20 some dollars for a rolled up piece of overcooked salted filet..if it was even filet..couldn't tell. Service aspect was horrible as well. Best part of that place is the roof top, which reminds me of real Mexico because of how dirty it is up there. Id be surprised if they even make it past this summer before they have to close down and reopen as some other crazy concept.I give this place zero stars
So disappointing. So overpriced. Don't waste your time!

what a dump this place is. just like coyote crossing's or cj's or whatever the hell it is now…same horrible serivce, lame way overpriced food. i feel bad for the new owners who are going to loose their shirt once this place changes owners…for the 9th time.
