For the past eight weeks, customers have been able to enjoy fresh New York-style bagels without having to go to the Big Apple.
These bagels are kettle-boiled and parbaked in a small bakery in New York and shipped daily to the New York Bagel Cafe and Deli (103 Turner Lane, in West Chester’s Turner Square Shopping Center). Customers have been raving about these bagels, according to owners Chris and Gordon Mason. The couple (who married atop the Empire State Building) has decorated the new business with beautiful black-and-white photos of landmarks like Grand Central Station and the Statue of Liberty. Signs for subway stops line the walls of this cozy café, which has wireless internet access.
Their menu includes an assortment of bagels (including Honey Whole Wheat and Sun Dried Tomato), hot and cold sandwiches made with Boar’s Head meats, Green Mountain Coffee (which comes in organic flavors), eggs, salads, muffins, cupcakes, and all-day breakfast.
The bagels are very doughy, hard on the outside, with a delicious soft interior. The staff includes a qualified pastry chef, and there are always new menu items, like a caramel apple wrap or grilled salmon wrap. Chris Mason puts a lot of emphasis on finding healthy items for the menu: Whole wheat bagels, mini bagels, lavender whole grain pancakes, and a children’s menu with lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and organic butter. They are looking into serving gluten-free bagels and breads.
Even though New York Bagel Cafe and Deli is part of a franchise, the
owners try to add a local angle to their store. The produce comes from the Produce Place in Kennett Square, smoked fish comes from Sugartown Smoked Specialties in West Chester, and the cupcakes are from Iced by Betsy.
They are looking into showcasing local artwork and constantly give back to area charities. Any unsold baked good is donated to local charities each night, including Safe Harbor and the Salvation Army. The “Charitywich” is going to be a special sandwich on their menu, with a portion of the proceeds donated to local charities.

I have to wonder if Leslie Weinberg has ever actually had a bagel from New York …..these bagels are nothing close to what you get in New York …on par with Country Bagel …..I got bagels at 7 in the morning and they were cold …..cold not room temp and certainly not hot ……..just another franchise that promises far more than they can deliver ……….
Thanks for your comments although we’re disappointed to hear that you weren’t impressed with the bagels! We want our customers to be satisfied with their purchases, so any concerns should be raised at the time with our staff who will do their best to make things right. Please contact us directly at nybturnersq@gmail.com and we’ll see what we can do. As for the bagels, they actually are genuine New York bagels! We get them from a small craft bakery just outside the city which is dedicated to making authentic New York style bagels from scratch. The bagels are kettle boiled and then hearth baked in a tunnel oven which gives the bagel a crusty outside with a soft chewy inside, traditional New York style. They’re then frozen and shipped to our stores for final baking which we do every day. The first batch are taken from the oven and placed in the baskets just before 6 a.m., so they would have cooled by 7 a.m., but not be “cold”. We bake through the day as we try to keep out just enough to satisfy demand, and this also ensures that the bagels we sell are as fresh as possible. The few that are left at the end of each day are either used to make our tasty bagel chips or donated to local charities.
We’ve had genuine New Yorkers in the store who love our bagels, so I guess this just proves that you can’t please everyone!! We like to try though, so we hope you’ll visit us again. Keep up to date with our specials and additional products by checking our Facebook page (New York Bagel Cafe & Deli – West Chester ). This week’s special features Sugartown’s (a West Chester company) delicious seafood cream cheese spreads, mm mmm!!!
I agree with Smobron. I had a bagel there and it was OK at best. Country Bagel’s bagels are probably the best in the West Chester area and I only give them a 6 out of 10. There really aren’t great bagels to be found locally.
I disagree with both of the other comments. Country Bagel??? Are you kidding me. Those Bagels have holes in the middle the same size as the outside of the Bagel. And they’re undercooked and barely round. I had one guy behind the counter tell me that customers like their Bagels because they are chewy.. I was like “CHEWY??.. it’s not cooked you flippin dolt!” The food inspector should close those guys down — they are clueless when it comes to how to shape and fully cook a Bagel. Give me a Break.
New York Bagel is the closest to what you’ll actually find in New York. The Everything Bagel is loaded with good quality seeds and IF you get them out of the oven, there’s nothing better around. The only thing these guys need to work on is having more quantity available… seems that the bins are close to empty all the time.
